Making Wine Like a Pro

Wine making is an easy, cost-efficient way to stock up on your favorite vintages. Although the wine-making process is fairly simple, it's important to follow the steps carefully to ensure you don't miss any elements. These steps will be crucial to the success of your batch.

Once you've decided to make a batch of wine, the first thing to consider is the equipment needed. The following is a list of the wine making equipment required to make a basic batch of red wine:

Large nylon straining bag
Cloth (any kind will do)
Large pail (with a lid)
Hydrometer
Thermometer
Acid titration kit
Clear, bendable plastic tubing (a half inch in diameter)
Two, one gallon glass jugs
Corks
Hand corker
Fermentation lock and bung
Wine bottles (between 5 and 7)

After you've assembled the necessary equipment, just follow these easy steps and you'll produce a great batch of wine in practically no time at all:

1. Prepare the Produce First, inspect the fruit to ensure the grapes are ripe and free of insects or other contaminants. Put the grapes in the straining bag and measure the sugar level using your hydrometer. A hydrometer can be purchased at any wine making store. The sugar density should be 22 ideally. Also, remember to remove the stems from all grapes in order to make your wine smoother and sweeter. Finish this step by transferring the ingredients into the jug.

2. Adjust the Juice This is a crucial step in the wine-making process. You must measure the acid content using your titration kit. The ideal level is 6 to 7 grams per liter for red wine and 6.5 to 7.5 per liter for white wine. You'll want to regulate the sugar level by measuring it with your hydrometer from time to time. Sugar levels should remain at 22 for both red and white wines. The fermentation should remain around 70-degrees-Fahrenheit for basic red wines. Abiding by these temperatures will ensure that the process goes smoothly.

3. Rack the Wine Insert your clear plastic hose into the wine jug and attach it to the opening of the other (empty) sanitized jug. Siphon the wine from one jug to the other in order to keep the wine in a completely sanitized container. Next, fit the jug with a bung and fermentation lock. This step may take some time, but it's important to be slow and careful so you don't stir up the sediment. Let the wine sit for an extended period of time (some people choose to wait weeks or even months).

4. Bottle the Wine Bottling your wine is the easy part. Simply siphon your wine from the jug into your wine bottles. Be sure to leave about 2-inches at the top of every bottle, otherwise it will cause overflow when the cork is inserted. To cork your wine bottles simply insert a cork into the hand corker, position the corker over the lever and insert.

5. Drink and Enjoy!

Summer Wine Chillers

Summer Wine Chillers By Janie Franz Summer is just a couple of weeks away and many of us are thinking about entertaining outdoors close to the barbeque grill. What better way to accent succulent steamed fish, caramelized fruit, or grilled veggies than a chilled white wine. On a hot day, even a red wine can take a little cooling down, especially when temperatures hit the 90s or higher. But how do you keep the wine flowing if your wine storage unit is in your kitchen or even in your cellar?

The TRUTH about SEARCH ENGINES If you could make a huge difference in a blogger's business, Would you? It's easy! Let me explain. One of the way Google Search works is that the more websites (blogs count) that link to a store site, the more it forces the site to the TOP of the search engine. That means if each of us - some of us - all of us link to Heliotrope ... We directly increase the number of people who will see Biggie T and Marc's store and the more people that see it ... The mor

Perhaps one of the most troubling problems which usually occurs that takes the enjoyment out of having a glass of wine is when even though your glasses are clean, look very foggy. We have all encountered it at one time or another and probably all can agree that there is something detracting about a foggy wine glass. Before you decide to throw out your glasses or invest in a set of inexpensive ones with the thought that fogging is inevitable so you might as well be ready to throw them away when the time comes, there are a few things that you can do to prevent fogging and bring back the glorious sparkle and shine to foggy glasses that you remember from when they were first purchased.

I know that some think that it's perfectly all right to put wine glasses in the dishwasher, and some machines even have special sections on the top rack to hold wine glass stems in place. We all know that crystal should never be put in the dishwasher, so I assume said stem holders are for everyday glasses. My dishwasher has them and I still won't use it to wash wine glasses. Why? There are two main reasons for this, the first is that dishwasher detergent tends to be a lot more harsh and abrasive and can etch your wine glasses making it fog with repeated washing, and second is that the temperature in a dishwasher can become so hot that it can actually cause a glass to crack.

With that being said, when washing wine glasses by hand the best method is actually quite simple, especially since you should be able to simply rinse out yours glasses to clean them. First, it is important to remember to use lukewarm water and not hot water. Abrasive cleaning agents should be avoided at all costs; and if you feel the need to use soap it is best to only use mild liquid dish soap. Remember to never use hard scrubbing sponges and cloths and to rinse the glasses thoroughly or the soap will leave a film deposit which will fog with build up and time and thus defeats the purpose of taking care when washing your glasses.

If you have taken care of your glasses and hand-washed them and still find they are starting to fog, there is still something you can do. Soak the foggy glasses in straight white vinegar for two to three hours. Then wash with warm water and mild liquid dish soap and repeat the soaking process if necessary to remove the remaining residue. It might be a bit of a time consuming process, but it will be worth it in the end when you have sparkling glasses that look beautiful!

Wine Stain Products we recommend

La Jota - Cabernet Sauvignon - Howell Mountain

The 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is 4-6 years away from enjoyable drinking. It is a dense, full-bodied, bruiser of a wine, with an opaque color, and a promising but restrained bouquet of minerals, smoke, and blackcurrants. Full-bodied, rich, and intense, as well as tannic and backward, it is a wine made for the long term rather than immediate drinkability. This is an immensely impressive Cabernet Sauvignon.
